Can EMDR be done virtually? Is it as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes! EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be effectively conducted online through secure video platforms. Research and clinical experience show that virtual EMDR can be just as effective as in-person sessions, offering a convenient option for those who prefer the comfort of home or have difficulty travelling.
Does EMDR really work? How effective is it?
Yes, EMDR is a well-researched and highly effective therapy for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and distressing memories. Studies show that many people experience noticeable relief within just a few sessions, and the benefits are often long-lasting. The effectiveness depends on individual needs and history, but many find it to be a faster path to healing compared to traditional talk therapy.
How long does EMDR last? How long is each session?
EMDR sessions typically last 50 to 80 minutes, though longer EMDR-intensive sessions can be booked depending on your needs and desires. The number of sessions needed varies based on the complexity of the trauma being processed. Once therapy is completed, the benefits of EMDR are often long-lasting, though some people may return for additional sessions if new challenges arise.
Is EMDR similar to other types of therapy, like CBT or exposure therapy?
EMDR is different from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure Therapy:
Unlike CBT, which focuses on catching and challenging negative thought patterns, EMDR helps reprocess distressing memories at their roots so they no longer trigger emotional distress.
Unlike Exposure Therapy, which involves repeated exposure to traumatic memories, EMDR allows for gentler processing, reducing distress without requiring extended exposure.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy? Why does it work?
EMDR has somatic (body-based) elements because it helps process trauma stored in the body. It works by stimulating bilateral brain activity (eye movements, tapping, or sounds), allowing the nervous system to release stored trauma and integrate it in a way that reduces emotional impact. This is why EMDR can help people move past difficult memories in a way that traditional talk therapy sometimes cannot.
What happens in an EMDR session?
- EMDR follows a structured process, including:
- Preparation – Building coping skills and ensuring safety.
- Assessment – Identifying a target memory.
- Reprocessing – Using eye movements or tapping to process the memory.
- Installation – Strengthening positive beliefs.
- Body Scan & Closure – Ensuring you feel grounded before ending the session.
Who developed EMDR, and when did it start?
EMDR was developed in 1987 by Dr. Francine Shapiro, a psychologist who discovered that certain eye movements could help reduce distress associated with traumatic memories.
Who can provide EMDR therapy?
Only qualified and licensed mental health professionals who have completed specialized EMDR training can provide EMDR therapy. This includes psychologists, clinical counsellors, social workers, and other trained therapists.

What Makes Your Practice Unique?
We honour your individual needs and strive to support your nervous system in feeling safe enough to engage in the therapeutic process. We tend to combine the power of EMDR Therapy with a compassionate approach known as parts work. This allows us to gently explore different parts of the self – like the inner protector or the part that holds fear – and address their unique needs and stories with respect. Our priority is always safety, which means we work at a pace that feels manageable and ensures that you are never pushed into reliving traumatic memories. By carefully listening to each part of your experience and using EMDR to integrate these insights, we help you find lasting healing.

Can Therapy Make Me Feel Worse?
As we begin to confront the complexities of our inner and outer relationships and delve into past pain, it’s common for painful feelings to surface, which can feel anxiety-inducing! This is a normal part of the trauma healing process and essential for moving forward and creating lasting results. EMDR is a modality designed to NOT re-traumatize but to help you process and move through past pain in a healthy way. We ensure that this journey is safe and supportive!
How Many Sessions Will it Take Until I Start to Feel Better?
The number of sessions you’ll require varies based on your individual needs and goals. In your first session, you’ll discuss the frequency and duration of therapy with your counsellor. Many clients notice positive changes within 4-6 sessions, as the stabilisation phase of trauma therapy focuses on helping you develop mindfulness skills, coping skills and inner resources so that you can experience symptom reduction and tangible improvements. It’s important to understand that while symptom reduction and ‘feeling better’ can happen fast, changing deeper traits or long-standing patterns takes more time and effort.. Lasting change often involves a more in-depth process, which can be discussed with your counsellor. We are here to help!
What Modalities Do You Use?
We use a variety of modalities to provide counselling tailored to your needs, including EMDR Therapy, Ego State Therapy and parts work, Somatic Therapy, Trauma-focused Therapy, Attachment-based Therapy, Mindfulness-based Therapy and more.
