For Teens Struggling with Anxiety and Disordered Eating: You’re Not Alone, and There’s a Way Through

If you’re a teen navigating anxiety, stress around food, or a relentless inner voice that tells you you’re not doing enough — we see you. Life can feel like a constant performance, like you’re supposed to hold it all together even when things feel heavy inside. Maybe you’re stuck in worry. Maybe food feels like the only thing you can control. Maybe you feel exhausted trying to be “perfect.”

At our counselling practice, we work with teens just like you. Teens who are thoughtful, sensitive, high-achieving — and quietly overwhelmed. If you’re struggling with anxiety, disordered eating, perfectionism, or shame, you’re not alone. And no, nothing is “wrong” with you.

There are reasons you feel this way. And healing through this is absolutely possible.

Why Do I Feel Like This?

When we work with teens, we often find that anxiety and disordered eating aren’t the full story — they’re the smoke, not the fire. What’s underneath is often unresolved stress, emotional pain, or past experiences that haven’t had a chance to be understood or processed.

This could look like:

  • Feeling like you have to be the strong one
  • Being stuck in people-pleasing or fear of letting others down
  • Criticizing yourself constantly
  • Struggling to trust your body or your emotions

These patterns don’t mean you’re broken. They’re ways your nervous system has tried to protect you.

How Trauma Therapy Helps Teens

Trauma therapy offers a safe, confidential space to slow down and finally make sense of what’s going on underneath the surface. We don’t push you to talk about anything before you’re ready. And we certainly don’t judge.

Our approach is gentle, grounded, and focused on what you need. We support teens in building safety inside their bodies and reconnecting with themselves. With time, therapy helps quiet that inner pressure, soothe anxiety, and release old patterns that no longer serve you.

Many of our therapists have been through their own dark chapters — we get how hard it is to open up. You’re not alone in this.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the tools we may use if it’s a fit for you. It’s a brain-based therapy that helps process stuck memories and the emotional responses that come with them. That might be the fear behind your anxiety, the shame that shows up with food, or the sense of not being good enough.

EMDR doesn’t erase memories. It helps your brain recognize that they’re in the past, so you can respond with more calm and confidence in the present.
